GENEVA — Independent digital human rights monitors have uncovered a network of coordinated social media accounts actively circulating fake media and disinformaion related to ongoing tensions in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
The investigation analyzed over 1,200 posts across major platforms that falsely accused targeted ethnic groups of staging violence or orchestrating attacks.
- Recycled Media: Several viral videos claiming to show recent troop movements were traced back to older conflicts outside the region.
- Altered Audio: Researchers identified synthetic voice tracks applied to authentic footage to misrepresent statements made by local civilians.
- Coordinated Engagement: Over 60% of the initial reposts originated from automated networks designed to artificially inflate engagement metrics and bypass content moderation filters.
Human rights researchers warn that online disinformation directly heightens real-world risk for displaced populations.
